Welcome! Today is Monday, and that means it is officially “Movie News Monday!” (“MNM!”)! Thanks for stopping in. I’m glad you’re here!

What is ‘MNM’ all about?

In case this is your first time here, “Movie News Monday!” (MNM) is the place to visit every Monday for a quick recap of trending entertainment news! I’ve collected info, rumors, etc from all over just for you to keep you updated on movies being released, actors/actresses in roles, dvd releases to keep a lookout for, which movie won in the box office over the weekend, etc! Are you ready for your weekly update? Here it is!

This Just In!!…

#1- “The Weekend Winner.” Well, this past weekend, more new releases entered the box office arena and for the 4th week in a row, not a single one of them won the #1 spot. Wow. Want to take a guess as to which movie claimed the #1 spot? Here’s a hint: it helped itself to the #1 spot for the last two weekends prior to this past one! That’s right. The Help ended on top for the THIRD weekend in a row. The Help was beat only in its debut weekend by The Rise of the Planet of the Apes , but since then, has reigned supreme. It had a repeat performance this past weekend.

Here are the weekend’s estimated results for Fri, Sept 2-Sun, Sept 4:

  1. The Help ~$14.2 million
  2. The Debt ~$9.7 million (NEW RELEASE)
  3. Apollo 18 ~$8.7 million (NEW RELEASE)
  4. Shark Night 3D ~$8.64 million (NEW RELEASE)
  5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes ~$7.8 million
  6. Colombiana ~$7.4 million
  7. Our Idiot Brother ~$5.2 million
  8. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark ~$4.9 million
  9. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World ~$4.6 million
  10. The Smurfs ~$4 million

Congratulations to The Help Once Again!! Woohoo! See, I told you to go see it! :) It probably will NOT be at the #1 spot any longer though!

#2-Wolvie’s Writer. The Wolverine has seen it’s fair share of hiccups in beginning production. The announced sequel to the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine first lost its initial director Darren Aronofsky, then had delayed filming location plans due to the unfortunate earthquake in Japan, and now is seeing further possible delays due to the title star Hugh Jackman’s filming of Les Miserables. Filming now doesn’t look to start until next spring!

So frustrating…

On top of all that, the screenplay, written by Oscar award winner Christopher McQuarrie, is to receive a rewrite by Mark Bomback. Bomback worked on screenplays for Total Recall (reboot), Jack the Giant Killer, and Live Free or Die Hard, and is expected to add some great polish to McQuarrie’s script. So far, the plan for The Wolverine is still to involve following Wolverine in Japan as he seeks answers to his forgotten past. Along the way, he is expected to confront the likes of characters such as Viper (Madame Hydra), and the Silver Samurai.

Look for more news on The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma)…sometime!

#3- “M.C. Murphy!” The 84th Annual Academy Awards will be here before you know it! Last year, we watched Anne Hathaway and James Franco “wow and dazzle” us (or for some, “bore and unimpress”) as they hosted Hollywood’s grandest ceremony. For 2012, it would appear that comedian Eddie Murphy is a top-runner to perform the duties of Master of Ceremonies!

Brett Ratner, director of X-Men: The Last Stand and Rush Hour, will be producing the 84th annual awards and allegedly wants Eddie Murphy to be the host. Ratner is supposed to be meeting with the Academy tomorrow (the 6th) to share his plans with them and details for having the stand-up comedian host. We’ll see.

Before becoming a movie star, Murphy entertained audiences with laughs as a prominent stand-up comedian. He translated his skill into film and continues to be popular among people of all ages via Beverly Hills Cop, The Nutty Professor, Shrek, Coming to America, and more! What are your thoughts on M.C. Murphy?

#4- “Frankenstein Film LIVES!!” Director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel) has officially taken up the helm for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I had no idea that a Frankenstein film was in the works.

And, while this comes as a surprise…get this: there are 6 other Frankenstein films in different stages of development! Ol’ flathead is a lot more popular than I thought!

Taken straight from Collider.com‘s report on this, check out the other projects:

  • David Auburn’s (Proof) adaptation of Peter Ackroyd’s novel The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein.
  • Summit’s adaptation of Kenneth Oppel’s novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein.
  • Sony’s contemporary version of the story.
  • Wake the Dead starring Haley Joel Osment.
  • Guillermo del Toro’s long-in-development adaptation starring Doug Jones as the monster (this is the one I want the most and the one that has the least chance of making it considering that Del Toro’s next film, Pacific Rim, doesn’t even come out until 2013)
  • Stuart Beattie’s adaptation of the comic book I, Frankenstein.

So, here’s MY question: Who should play as the Frankenstein Monster?! My vote right now goes to Kevin Nash who played the huge “candy-striper” guy that beat up Thomas Jane/The Punisher. Remember him? He could do it! :D

#5- “This Week’s Blu-ray release.” This week, look for the following films on Blu-ray to possibly add to your collection:

X-Men: First Class– This is an absolute “must own” starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and more as your favorite X-Men characters. See them join forces for the first time in the origin story told well in this film. Also enjoy tons of extra features, footage, and cameos! Pick this one up this week. Click the picture for my review of the film:also releasing:

HannaI didn’t get to check this one out in theaters and am looking forward to watching it. Be sure to check out Scott’s review of the Blu-ray for Hanna starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, and Eric Bana over at Front Room Cinema. Click HERE!

Well, that’s it for this round of “Movie News Monday!”

Thanks for reading! Happy Watching!
